In an attempt to move focus onto developing its fresh, innovative products, Yahoo has shelved many of its less popular ones. The Search Engine Company has integrated the majority of features from its newly retired stock into other areas of its vast hoard, so consumers need not worry about being unable to access valued qualities
Products including Research Reports, Newlook Service and Boomarks.yahoo.com were amongst products removed earlier this year, in April & May, when Yahoo first signified its intentions. Last week, the company divulged its plans for further change.
Verifying via a blog post, Jay Rossiter, senior vice president, wrote:
“Over the past two years, our teams have been incredibly focused on our mission: making the world’s daily habits more inspiring and entertaining. This focus has allowed us to launch some new, exciting products while giving us the opportunity to make the core products our users already love even better.
“To achieve this, we took a hard look at our products and have shut down some of the less popular ones and integrated widely loved features from others into core Yahoo experiences.”
There are several Yahoo products which have recently been dispatched. Here we discuss how users can cope with their removal and if any of their features have been incorporated elsewhere:
Xobni: Revolutionary at the time of its inception, Xobni improved the efficiency, practicality and just about everything to do with a user’s email. However, plans have long been in the pipeline to remove it and this occurred on 02/07/2014. Despite its shelving, Yahoo have incorporated many of Xobni’s key features, such as ‘compose auto-suggest’ and ‘people-centric mail search’ into Yahoo mail. The technology behind Xobni provides a concrete foundation from which progression seems inevitable.
Yahoo Shine: With the successful introduction of digital magazines in recent times, in which the much-lauded topics on Yahoo shine are explored in further detail, Yahoo intend to continue ‘Shine’s’ legacy. Despite officially closing on 31/07/2014, digital magazines, such as Yahoo Travel, will perpetuate the valuable content of these topics.
People Search: To maximise convenience for users, People Search was closed on 02/07/2014. It was deemed unnecessary as the majority of users allegedly want one place to find everything they require. As such, its features have been combined with Yahoo search’s, with the latter becoming the one stop shop for all browser’s needs.
Yahoo toolbar on chrome: In accordance with recent Google Chrome policy updates, the yahoo toolbar will be eradicated from the Chrome Web store by July 22nd at the latest. Replacing it will be the Yahoo Extension for chrome, allowing users’ speedy access to Yahoo whenever they open a new tab. It is worth noting the toolbar remains available for Firefox and IE at toolbar.yahoo.com for truly dedicated ‘Yahoo-ers’.
Committed to progression, Yahoo has outlined “four core areas” on which it intends to focus its efforts.
-
Search
-
Video
-
Digital Magazines
-
Communications
Although not impacting directly on online marketers, Yahoos changes will affect the way users approach, utilise and view the search engine.
