The Original Manuscript Of

"The Twa Dogs"

World Exclusive

This original manuscript of "The Twa Dogs" is the first of only 6 surviving original manuscripts from the famous Kilmarnock Edition , published on 14th June, 1786. This is the actual manuscript Burns sent to the publisher. You will note certain markings on the document include underlining - notes in the margin - cross marks etc. These markings were added by Wilson, the publisher of the Kilmarnock Edition, and show where he was giving instructions to his printers to add italics, make bold, add directions on the positioning of words, and such like. (Oh but for the power of Word Processing Software!)

It is interesting to note that paper was scarce, and as such, very expensive. Burns therefore made effective use of paper, often finishing one poem and starting another on the same sheet. It is also evident that Burns handwriting was incredibly neat, and relatively easy to read even today. Whilst the neatness of his flowing handwriting is of great assistance to the reader, the fragility of the fading documents does require close scrutiny. I wonder what a handwriting analyst might make of it? Anyone out there with a view?

On a personal note, whilst preparing the presentation of these manuscripts for publication here at The World Burns Club, I did experience a great sense of wonder and humility in reading over the original piece. Sat in a darkened room with soft lighting and reading the actual handwritten words to "The Twa Dogs", roused strange emotions..and made the piece even more powerful.

Reading Burns work in standard book print is hugely devalued when compared with the masters original handwritten presentation. As such I would urge you to read this manuscript - word for word, and share in the experience. To assist in following the text, and for those less familiar with the piece, we have provided a "pop-up window" facility to allow you to follow a printed version.

We hope you enjoy reading this manuscript, now available to the entire world for the first time, here at The World Burns Club. Many thanks to Irvine Burns Club for assistance.
