A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

The “Burns Movement” is a world wide organisation of clubs which were formed to honour and perpetuate the name and works of Robert Burns.   Since 1885 the Robert Burns World Federation Limited has been doing just that; although in those embryonic years the name was the “Burns Federation” and was centred for many years within that wonderful building known as the Dick Institute, Kilmarnock.  In the late 90s the home of the Burns Movement moved to its present location, Dean Castle Country Park, Kilmarnock.

Although the management structure of organisation altered, we are now a registered Charitable Company and have a Chief Executive and a Board of Directors, the objective of the organisation remains the same and 2 full time employees operate from that base to deal with the many enquiries received and the plethora of administrative responsibilities that accompanies the organisation.

Within the current “Burns Movement” there are so many dedicated people whose enthusiasm is a joy to behold and I have the wonderful privilege of being their President.  Many people are of the opinion that “Burns People” are only busy during the months of January and February each year but I speak from experience when I say that “Burnsians” are busy throughout the year performing the many functions necessary to keep the name of Robert Burns in the public eye.  Foremost among these are the 5 committees, viz: Literature, Heritage, Conference, Schools and Marketing each convened by an active member of “The Federation”. Our main means of communication is the “Burns Chronicle" which has been in existence since 25 January 1892 and like Johnie Walker’s Whisky, is “Still Going Strong Today.

We have entered the modern world of communication with our web site, http://www.robertburnsfederation.co.uk where you can easily access and learn everything you need to know about the “Burns Movement” from how to organise a Burns Supper, how to choose speakers and how to prepare your speeches with example speeches; appropriate “Burns” quotes, and a discussion forum where you meet with participants whose knowledge of Robert Burns is as wide as the widest river.

As President of the Robert Burns World Federation Limited I give you a warm welcome to our website and I would encourage you to avail yourself of the most helpful information therein.

In conclusion, please seriously consider joining a Burns Club local to you where you will made very welcome and enjoy yourself.
